You will be expected to speak about something you have studied for years, something you have experienced in Christian school, and, if all goes well, something that really interests you: the common things of God and man, the ministry of the Christian churches, the feasts and holy day, the moral-ethical dilemmas from everyday life, the Scriptures…

What is the significance of Theolingua being a NATIONALLY RECOGNISED language exam?
State recognition (accreditation) means that the holder of a Theolingua exam certificate enjoys the same rights and privileges as those who have passed other state-recognised general or specialised language exams. The most important of these, apart from language proficiency, are: bonus points for admission to institutions of higher education, fulfilment of the requirements for a diploma (or PhD), and entitlement to a foreign language salary supplement.
What level of language proficiency does the Theolingua language exam require?
The Theolingua Language Exam assesses the knowledge and language skills of candidates at three levels – basic, intermediate and advanced – corresponding to the B1, B2 and C1 levels used in the European Union. The type and scope of the examination questions are adapted to and reflect the language skills expected at the three levels mentioned above.
Can I take the oral (A) or written (B) part of the exam separately?
A partial certificate is available under the examination system. You can take the A and B exams, i.e. the oral and written tests, separately and at different times.
Can an oral (A) or written (B) exam taken elsewhere be combined with the Theolingua Language Exam?
Any other general language exam (oral or written) can be combined with the Theolingua language exam, e.g. you can take the written ITK exam and then the oral Theolingua, and the sum of the two will result in a type C language certificate.
What kind of tasks should I expect in the written test?
In the case of the basic level written tests, there is no translation from Hungarian into a foreign language and from a foreign language into Hungarian, and no multiple-choice test. These types of tasks have been found to cause undue difficulty for our basic level candidates and do not adequately showcase the language skills they have acquired. Reading comprehension tasks are present in the form of a Hungarian text, which is required to be summarised in a foreign language and a foreign language task to be summarized in Hungarian.
Letter writing is also part of the basic written test, but here the candidate has only to solve a simple communicative situation taken from everyday life. At the intermediate level, in addition to reading comprehension, there is a translation task from a foreign language into Hungarian, but the Hungarian text does not have to be translated, only summarised in the foreign language. Finally, candidates compose a short essay based on set criteria. At the advanced level, there is a multiple choice test and, in addition to the translation and summary tasks, a longer essay reflecting a more complex and higher level of text production is required.
What should I expect at the oral exam?
The oral part of the exam includes listening comprehension of machine-read texts at all three levels. At the basic and intermediate level, this is followed by a discussion of personal topics, a picture description and a situational task. At the advanced level, however, candidates are required to be more demanding, selective and complex in both the style and the content of their oral expression.
Example: at the basic level, the candidate is only required to describe the picture, but at the intermediate level he/she is expected to express his/her thoughts on the subject of the picture independently. At the advanced level, the candidate chooses between two professional topics and is asked to elaborate on the topic of his/her choice.
At the advanced level, there is an additional task of summarising a Hungarian text in the foreign language.
