Department of Human Dignity and Social Justice

The Department of Human Dignity and Social Justice was created in 2014 as the successor to the former Department of Humanities and Social Sciences with the aim of enhancing teaching and research in the fields of ethics (ethics, bioethics, social ethics) and the social sciences, in addition to that of philosophy.
The humanities are an integral part of the training in theology. Although philosophy, at first sight, may seem inaccessible as an ivory tower, in reality it deals with fundamental questions that concern us all: why is there something rather than nothing? What is the meaning of life? What are the limits of cognition? What is just and what is unjust? How do we define human dignity? Does God exist?
Our quest for answers spans the philosophical tradition from classical Greek philosophy to contemporary thinkers. Our courses place spcial emphasis on the questions more closely related to theology.
Academic work in the department also explores the social dimension of philosophy and theology. Social ethics includes issues of justice and human coexistence, community solidarity, and social and environmental sustainability.
Students studying for the Master’s program in Pastoral Counselling and Organizational Development established by the Department will acquire the basics of professional care, while putting social ethical principles into practice.
