The study of theology is particularly suitable for those planning to work in the field of theology (faith education, pastoral care, other church ministry). It is a highly creative, respected vocation requiring a profound sense of responsibility. Theology is a source of beauty and spiritual and intellectual rewards for those who pursue it, but, like all vocations concerning people and interpersonal relations, it poses many challenges of its own. A true sense of vocation and life-long dedication are both necessary to its pursuit.
The MA in Theology is a state-recognised Master’s degree and a professional qualification in theology.
The duration of the programme is 5 years (10 semesters) for the bachelor’s degree and 6 years (12 semesters) for the Master of Pastoral Studies.
What is the aim of the Theology degree?
The aim of the bachelor’s degree is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of theology. Graduates find employment within the Church or in secular occupations requiring a university degree. The pastoral specialisation is designed to prepare lay people for parish ministry.
The Theology degree is a basis for admission to doctoral school for those with good academic results. Graduate studies are possible at the Faculty of Theology of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, but also at the institutions of our distinguished foreign partners, such as the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna, the Faculty of Theology of the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, or the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven).
At the latter universities, it takes 3-4 years to obtain a doctorate after having completed a degree in theology. Those with a doctorate usually go on to apply for teaching and research posts in theological colleges and faculties.
What subjects do theology graduates study?
Theological studies are divided into three stages (see here „for further information on the structure of theology):
- the first year includes predominantly foundational courses introducing the various disciplines, with some specialised courses being offered in the second semester
- the second and third years focus on philosophy, Old and New Testament scriptural study and church history
- the fourth and fifth years feature biblical languages, biblical exegesis, systematic and applied theology
- the sixth year is dedicated to practical courses and pastoral practice
The timetable of studies differs depending on whether a student begins his/her studies in an odd or an even year.
