DEPARTMENT OF BIBLICAL STUDIES
The reading and deeper understanding of Scripture has been a subject of interest to scholars and believers alike for thousands of years. As its name suggests – the Book of Books, Holy Scripture or the Bible ( a Greek word designating ‘books’) – is a collection of writings serving as the foundation of two world religions: Judaism and Christianity.
Since the Scriptures were written over the course of several centuries, it is essential to understand them in the light of the circumstances, both historical and cultural, of their composition. The Second Vatican Council, in its dogmatic constitution Dei Verbum (Word of God), states that „Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are the only sacred deposit of the Word of God entrusted to the Church” (DV 10), and stresses that „Sacred Scripture contains the Word of God and, being inspired, is truly the Word of God; therefore, the study of Scripture should be the soul of the doctrine of the faith” (DV 24).
In keeping with the teachings of our Church, our college places great emphasis on exploring and transmitting the profundities of both Old and New Testament Scripture. To this end, Bible studies courses provide students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge concerning the Holy Scriptures. The introductory subjects present each scripture book in detail, focusing on its theological message. The exegetical courses lead students to engage in a more in-depth analysis of certain passages by imparting exegetical methods. Students acquire proficiency in Biblical Hebrew and ancient Greek, enabling them to study the Bible in its original languages at a basic level. Seminars complementing our lectures courses feature exercises and methodology necessary for students to read and analyze the Scriptures together. Prayerful reading of the Bible, known as lectio divina, takes center stage. This practice was encouraged by the Second Vatican Council: “And let them remember that prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that God and man may talk together; for „we speak to Him when we pray; we hear Him when we read the divine saying.” (DV 25).

The department also supports Scripture-related academic and pastoral activities by organising conferences, workshops, lectures and training opportunities, and by editing our the lectio divina resource (www.lectiodivina. hu), as encouraged by synodal teaching: “Catholic exegetes then and other students of sacred theology, working diligently together and using appropriate means, should devote their energies, under the watchful care of the sacred teaching office of the Church, to an exploration and exposition of the divine writings. This should be so done that as many ministers of the divine word as possible will be able effectively to provide the nourishment of the Scriptures for the people of God, to enlighten their minds, strengthen their wills, and set men’s hearts on fire with the love of God” (DV23).
The Biblical Magisterium, therefore, in listening to the Holy Spirit, carries out its work of teaching and research in the service of the Word of God in the light of the words of Jesus Christ “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. (Jn 14,23) We dedicate this activity and those entrusted to the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Divine Word, and of Saint Jerome, patron saint of students of the Scriptures.
